THE
SKEPTIC'S TOOLBOX
The
title "Skeptic's Toolbox" is taken from an
annual workshop sponsored by CSICOP
and created by Ray Hyman. The toolbox takes place in Eugene,
Oregon in August of each year. Ray Hyman is a Professor Emeritus
in Psychology and a world-renowned skeptic.
The
workshops are designed to probe the many claims and unusual
phenomena within the paranormal and pseudoscientific communities
by employing the tools of skepticism. Activities and resources
help to arm workshop participants with the skeptic's toolbox
and to develop a set of thinking skills that can serve them
well as they encounter all sorts of extraordinary ideas that
are circulating within society.
The
Skeptic's Toolbox helps people to navigate through reality
successfully.
Here
we will be exploring the many tools that can be found within
the Skeptic's Toolbox and we will work to develop the
skills to use these tools effectively. We will also look at
several workshops that Ray Hyman has produced and see how
they may be applicable to Young Skeptics and the educational
resources we are creating for teachers and parents.
There
will be some overlap here with other sections on the Young
Skeptics' site. The Skeptic
Detectives Club, the Investigations
Room, the Educational
Resource Area and the Activities
Section are all places where you will find related material.
You
will be able to apply what you learn here to your own skeptical
adventures and the many unusual and bizarre phenomena you
may encounter throughout the day!
