The Mothman phenomenon took place in West Virginia in 1966. Several witnesses reported being frightened by a human-sized winged creature with glowing red eyes. The name "Mothman" was coined by a reporter using a villain character from the "Batman" series. The stories bear a superficial resemblance to the legends of the Jersey Devil and the Flatwoods UFO Monster and caused a local panic. Most Mothman descriptions include bird-like characteristics. A viable theory is that witnesses saw a large, unusual bird, such as a crane or owl, in the dark. But, at the time, paranormal explanations abounded as the Mothman sightings were linked to UFO reports and the nearby collapse of a bridge soon after. Since the sightings ceased after 1968, it remains a cryptozoological mystery with colorful and strange elements. A movie based on a book about the sighting, called The Mothman Prophesies came out in 2002 and caused new interest in the 35 year old legend.
