This strange creature is most often described as a flying creature with glowing eyes and monstrous features. Hysteria surrounding the Jersey Devil peaked in 1909 throughout southern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Local folklore points to the source of the Jersey Devil - a legendary event that took place in 1735. A woman in the Pine Barrens area of southern New Jersey is said to have given birth to a cursed and deformed "devil child" who took off into the wilderness. Two centuries later, alleged sightings of an monster labeled the Jersey Devil caused widespread panic - appearing on rooftops and in backyards, sometimes leaving hoofprints in the snow. Beyond these accounts, no evidence exists that the creature was anything more than cases of mistaken identity, hysteria-induced hallucinations or a hoax. Some sightings are reported today but the descriptions are so varied that its obvious the popular name is becoming a label for anything unusual sighted in and around the Pine Barrens. The legend of the Jersey Devil is the most popular New Jersey folk story and will likely endure. |
