Used synonymously with UFO, flying saucer is actually a more accurate term for alien spacecraft considering the acronym UFO can apply to all mysterious flying objects. The word flying saucer originates in early science fiction with alien flying machines taking the form of a very simple plate (also called saucer.) The saucer-shape is also the common one seen in faked ufo photography.
