ONLINE INVESTIGATIONS
Tame the Wilds of Cyberspace!

The Internet is a great invention, isn't it? Here we can find information and resources on just about every subject imaginable...and then some! The virtual world is providing new and much more accessible opportunities to almost everyone - especially in the realms of education.

Unfortunately, though, there are few filters that separate reliable information from false and misleading data. We are presented with piles upon piles of ideas, claims and unusual phenomena without a tool kit to help us sort out the good from the bad and the bogus and properly evaluate the information we are being fed. We come across web sites that try to convince us that the information they provide on their page is the real thing - true beyond a shadow of a doubt. Sure enough, though, we're bound to find another site that presents the opposite claim and also purports to being the real thing. Two contradictory claims can't both be true!

How are we to make sense of it all and avoid drowning in the confusion and nonsense that pervades cyberspace?

How do we decide where the evidence lies so we're not believing everything we see and read on the Net and falling for ideas that don't work?

ENTER THE SKEPTIC DETECTIVES OF THE VIRTUAL WORLD...

...HERE TO TAME THE WILDS OF CYBERSPACE!

The Internet is quickly growing into the largest and most complex web of information our world has ever known. But it doesn't have a Dewey or a Linneus to sort things out nor is it a self-cleaning ecosystem like the great rainforests and jungles of the world. The debris and gobbledygook are added every minute of every day and confusion continues to mount - a downward spiral sending our knowledge base into complete and utter chaos. Cyberspace needs a cleaning crew!

The online investigations area will contain several activities and resources and will overlap with other areas within the Young Skeptics Program. We invite you to participate in our efforts to tame the wilds of cyberspace and encourage you to send in your own ideas and material to be included here.

We hope to offer a little something for everyone and will look forward to the day where we can offer a useful and comprehensive resource that not only helps people to navigate through the world wide web of cyberspace but also the world wide web of reality!

TAME THE WILDS OF CYBERSPACE

Soon we will be creating a warehouse of ideas and claims found on the Internet that are in need of investigation. Phenomena will be divided into different age levels so that we can all take part in the fun! Alongside the web sites listed we will provide investigative questions and other resources that may help you in your investigation. When you've finished your assessment, you can publish your results here for peer review and can review others that are published as well.

Keeping a library of online investigations will also provide other site visitors with resources and material for their own explorations in cyberspace and every now and then we can publicize our findings and let the world know how many acres of the wild world web have been tamed!

You can also contribute to the Tame the Wilds of Cyberspace project by sending in the URLs of web sites you find that are in need of an investigative eye and we will post them here for other Skeptic Detectives to explore.

ARMCHAIR INVESTIGATIONS - ALL SIDES

Sometimes we find web sites that present different positions on a particular phenomena or claim. Taking a look at the many sides of any given argument or idea is a good exercise in assessing its validity. Comparing different viewpoints can improve our research and help us to recognize the many characteristics that are used to support and "sell" a particular claim. It can also be just plain fun and interesting to read about what others think and believe about various phenomena.

In the Armchair Investigations room we will be listing topics and providing as many different sides as we can find on the net. In the future, we will also develop this into several educational activities and accompany the URLs with investigative resources. Be sure to send in any sites you find that would be worthwhile including here.

Here's a sample to wet your appetite until we get going with this project:
